Project Yoga is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to promote mental health and physical well-being in Greater Cincinnati’s underserved communities through trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness. At Project Yoga, we believe in the transformative power of movement and breath. Through these practices, we spread the ripple effect of kindness, peace, and compassion and mindfulness. Our trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness programs are designed to nurture mental health, foster physical well-being, and cultivate a sense of connection and belonging for all. We collaborate with schools, shelters, social service organizations, and other community-based nonprofits to introduce safe yoga movements, mindfulness, meditation, and breathing exercises. Through the lens of trauma-informed yoga, our classes empower individuals with life-changing coping skills that support mental health, promote peace, and build resiliency, fostering healthy, safe, and thriving communities.

Project Yoga’s Approach to Trauma-Informed Yoga

We recognize that trauma is pervasive and can profoundly impact individuals' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, particularly in underserved communities and among youth. This is why we are dedicated to offering trauma-informed care through yoga practices that are not only accessible but also tailored to support a whole-person approach to mental health, physical wellness, social-emotional well-being, and resiliency. Project Yoga instructors and assistants are trained in understanding trauma and its impact and guide students without judgment to authentically create a learning environment that is sensitive to trauma and socio-cultural differences and supports healing.

What is trauma-informed yoga?

Trauma-informed yoga is an approach to yoga instruction that considers the effect of trauma on individuals' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. 
It emphasizes creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for students who have experienced trauma, acknowledging that traditional yoga practices may not always be suitable or beneficial for them.

Yoga class for Cincinnati students

Yoga postures are challenging. Even the simplest ones build strength, flexibility, and resiliency from the inside out.

Our certified yoga teachers teach breathing techniques, showing how the act of breathing mirrors how we feel. We teach how to be patient and gentle with ourselves and how to practice mindfulness. We also teach how to respond rather than react to difficult emotions, pain, and stress. To us, learning how to stand on one foot isn’t as important as learning how to fall and get back up.

Over 50,000 individuals in Greater Cincinnati have learned the practices of yoga and mindfulness from Project Yoga.

Your support provides yoga classes for a student each month. Your donation allows you to take your practice off the mat and into our community.

 
Yoga meets you where you are. Every time. Good days and tough days. It is perhaps the most forgiving and welcoming form of physical and mental activity. I support Project Yoga because I know that bringing this practice to children, adults and seniors is giving them a moment of peace. It is both calming and energizing. It gives people time and space and permission to quiet the mind and move the body. It builds strength of both mind and body.  That is the power of Project Yoga.
